Back Pains
Back Pain : Deltachiropracticanddecompression.com
Back pain is a common problem affecting millions of people around the world. It is usually found in the ligaments around the spine, bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae, spinal cord and nerves, muscles of the low back, internal organs of the pelvis and abdomen, and the skin covering the lumbar area. Back pain can also be caused by the disorders of the aorta, chest tumors, and spine inflammation.
Causes of Back Pain
The pain may be temporary or it could affect different parts of the back, neck or shoulders and sometimes involve the pinching of nerves, and affecting the legs or arms.
Sprains and strains: People with pre-existing problems are more vulnerable to soft tissue injuries like sprains and strains. A sprain is a joint injury that involves stretching or tearing of the ligaments. A strain is an injury to muscle or tendons. Stretching a ligament or muscle too quickly can result in a tear. Excessive force and certain repetitive use may also damage muscles.
Disc problems: The intervertebral discs act as a cushion between our vertebrae. Often these discs dry out and become harder with age, making them very much susceptible to injury. The common disc complaints involve disc bulging - prolapse, herniating or even rupturing.
The disc problems mostly arise because of the stress or injury caused by the back strain -while lifting things.
Muscle imbalance or poor posture: A muscle imbalance is a condition that involves certain muscles losing their natural functioning and over-working or being under utilized. This is because of the daily activities, stress, and bad habits of body use over a sustained period. Muscle imbalance can lead to or work in tandem with bad posture to result in such back problems as chronic lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain or frozen shoulder.
Emotional or neuromuscular causes: Certain stress or emotional traumas are known to cause muscular tension that in turn leads to severe back pain.
Structural Problems: Improper postures and structural problems involving the spine can cause back pain. These include:
a. Scoliosis - An excessive sideways curve of either the upper or lower regions of the spine. b. Kyphosis - Also called as hunchback, is an excessive outward curve of the upper back.
Diseases that affect the spine and cause back pain are
1. Ankylosing spondylitis: An inflammation in spinal joints and limb joints leads to fusion of vertebrae.
2. Arthritis: Mainly osteoarthritis, involves cartilage that involves break down of joints and cushions.
3. Osteoporosis: A condition involving thinning of the bones. This commonly occurs in women after the menopause and rarely in men.
4. Sciatica: Sciatica is nerve pain from the sciatic nerve, a nerve that runs from the spine through the buttock and down the back of the leg. Sciatica is often caused by a disc bulge or prolapse pressing on the spinal nerve. Other causes can include a narrowing of the nerve tunnel between discs as a result of osteoarthritis.
Thus understand the causes of back pain and practice a healthy life.
